Despite being in early stages, the developers have released a stable version with autoupdate and it's so much faster and better than VLC, imho. Give it a try. I for myself have finally kicked VLC from my desktop. PS: Love the extra controls and equalizer on IINA. What do you think about it? Any other alternatives I should look into? PPS: Forgot to mention: if you install the Chrome or Safari addon (File - Open URL - then hit the links below the box) then you can also watch youtube videos or basically anything else in IINA.
Like the app 'helium'. Just in IINA and All in One solution. EDIT: Netflix doesn't work because of login credentials. I suspected that this would be another gui for a player rather than an actual new player. Mpv is awesome, and together with youtube-dl it plays pretty much anything I can throw at it. I'm very happy with only the cli, have settings and keyboard shortcuts configured to my liking and it does everything I need.
If I'm ever missing something I just look it up, and find whatever command that does exactly what I want, instead of bothering with a gui that probably doesn't have the countless options implemented. Nice that there is a good gui for all that wants it though. It does appear to play 60fps (1920x1080) video without dropping frames on my old 2008 MacPro ('Cheesgrater' tower) when looking at the “Inspector” (Cmd-I) window in IINA. I would assume that it performs similar to mpv. I also checked with the Quartz Debug (fps meter for Xcode development) and screen refresh was indeed at 60 fps, so all frames appear to be rendered properly. Actual performance will obviously depend on your hardware and if you get pushed beyond any bottlenecks.
Having recently switched from mpv to IINA I can say that I haven't really noticed any performance difference, although I primarily use it for 30fps 720p and 1080p video, rather than 60fps content.
